Serum levels of antioxidants and its supplementation in people living with HIV: integrative review

Objective: To conduct an integrative review of serum levels antioxidants and the effects their supplementation on people living with HIV (PLHIV). Methods: A research was performed in electronic databases LILACS MEDLINE, using descriptors "HIV" AND "antioxidants"; 110 publications were identified, 92 which available MEDLINE database 3 database. After applying exclusion criteria, 8 articles selected for final evaluation.Results: The studies divided into 4 prospective observational clinical trials or food sources antioxidants. We observed that initiation antiretroviral therapy its prolonged use negatively influenced parameters oxidative stress, deficiency associated more significant damage to mitochondrial DNA. Supplementation foods are antioxidants, such as dark chocolate spirulina, has had beneficial lipids antioxidant capacity. Conclusion: Clinical a robust methodology, isolated nutrients, extended periods intervention, assessment consumption necessary elucidate stress PLHIV faced factors changes metabolic rates this population.
